A storm creates more than one risk
Heavy rainfall and coastal flooding can increase water entry while power outages make electric pumping less dependable. A system should be evaluated for both normal water intrusion and exceptional events.
Keep critical equipment accessible
Locating a pump and controls outside the pit may help protect serviceable components from routine pit water. Enclosure location and elevation still need to be selected for the property’s flood exposure.
Plan for outages
Battery backup or generator capability may provide additional operating flexibility when utility power is unavailable. Runtime depends on pump load, battery capacity, water inflow and system design; no backup should be assumed unlimited.
Know when to shut down
Some severe flood conditions call for a controlled shutdown rather than continued pumping. The Pit Sucker design includes a high-water shutdown feature intended for catastrophic flood conditions. Have the system reviewed and maintained by qualified personnel.
