Why Oil Detection Matters in Elevator Pit Sump Pump Systems

Practical guidance for property managers, equipment owners and Southwest Florida facilities.

Water and oil may coexist

Elevator pits can collect water as well as lubricants or hydraulic fluids. A pump that moves everything indiscriminately can create a discharge concern when oil is present.

What an oil-sensing system does

An oil/water detection control can be designed to run when water is detected and stop pumping when oil contacts the sensor. This adds a protective control, but does not eliminate the need for inspection, maintenance or compliance with local discharge rules.

Why installation design matters

Sensor placement, debris protection, pump access and electrical protection all affect system reliability. Controls should be evaluated for the actual pit layout and potential flood conditions.

The Pit Sucker approach

The Pit Sucker system is designed with pumping equipment and controls outside the pit in a protected enclosure, with oil/water sensing in the sump. Ask about site-specific configuration, maintenance and available backup options.
