Five Signs a Diesel Fuel Tank May Need Cleaning

Practical guidance for property managers, equipment owners and Southwest Florida facilities.

1. Repeated filter plugging

Filters that clog sooner than expected may indicate sediment, microbial debris or other contamination in the fuel system. Diagnose the cause rather than replacing filters indefinitely.

2. Water found in the tank

Water can enter through condensation, fill points or compromised seals. It can support corrosion and microbial growth, especially where fuel and water meet.

3. Sludge or sediment during sampling

Dark deposits or particles at the bottom of a tank can be drawn into equipment as fuel levels change or the vessel moves.

4. Unexplained engine or generator issues

Hard starts, rough operation or fuel-delivery problems can have several causes. Contaminated fuel is one possibility that deserves investigation alongside mechanical faults.

5. A long interval since inspection

Tanks that sit for long periods, including standby generator tanks and seasonal boats, benefit from a documented inspection and fuel-management plan. Sludge Suckers provides tank-cleaning services for marine, generator and equipment applications.
